About Oregon Expat
Sometimes the best view is from the outside, and an American expatriate living in Portugal is, in many ways, outside of both nations. The views can be spectacular. I’m also a science nerd, Mac dweeb, grammar geek, and science fiction author, so the posts in this blog tend to be eclectic.
Click the “About” tab if that wasn’t quite enough detail — or go to my official author website.

Three teachers at our son’s school have been arranging a class trip to Scotland. They contacted Ryanair and asked for a group rate for 20 seats. The response was unbelievable: around €300 per seat. This is for a short, nonstop … Continue reading

On the way to Oregon
For the first several days of our trip to Oregon, we were far out of state. Our flight landed in Vancouver, British Columbia, where we spent two days before hopping the ferry to Victoria. Two days later we were on … Continue reading

Walking at the UBC

The great yellow mystery
Our first day in Vancouver consisted largely of trying to stay awake long enough to start adjusting our body clocks. (Eight time zones is a killer.) Accordingly, we went for a walk in Stanley Park and admired the scenery, which … Continue reading

Wanderers
Ooo. This is a gorgeous film, with imaginative and extremely detailed visions of what future Terrans might see if we ever get out of our gravity well and start living elsewhere in our solar system. The film alone is worth … Continue reading

Scottish breakfast
One thing we discovered during our Scotland vacation is that the Scottish breakfast is not a myth — at least, not when one is staying at B&Bs. Typical of our breakfasts were eggs made to order, sautéed mushrooms (one B&B … Continue reading

Inveraray Castle
As promised in the comments to Sunday’s post, here are a few more photos of Inveraray Castle, home of Clan Campbell. The Armoury Hall really is worth the price of entrance all by itself. Not only does it contain an … Continue reading

Mystery Scotland photo
My poor blog has been neglected of late, what with writing and/or editing deadlines, a vacation, and now vacation photos and travelogues. I think I’ll start tossing my travelogues onto the blog later this week, but in the meantime, here’s … Continue reading
