A dose of homesickness

I opened up my Atlantic newsfeed this morning and what did I see but this headline:

The Gem of the Pacific Northwest: A Visual Ode to Oregon’s Seashore

It’s a lovely 5:45 video consisting of a series of vignettes along the north and central Oregon coast. Ah, the mist…the firs and pines, spruces and hemlocks…the quality of light…every sight and sound is so familiar. Hey, those kids are at Beverly Beach State Park! I used to live literally up the hill. And the scenes of the Newport waterfront murals at the end might have made me blur a little bit.

Sometimes being away from Oregon is harder than others. This video was a definite dose of homesickness this morning. (I can’t embed it, but the link will take you there.)

It’s been two years since my last visit. I think I need an Oregon fix.

Two years?! As a native, I know I could not be away that long. How I wish I could be at the coast now, due for mid to high nineties in the valley today (I should convert to metric for your non US readers, I suppose). It may be unusually warm at the coast, too, though. I’ll be glad when summer is over. Too bad that’s months away.

I wouldn’t stay away this long if it weren’t so difficult to get there. Eight time zones is a heck of a flight, and alas, there are no international flights direct to Eugene…and that’s not mentioning the expense.

I’m still waiting for transporters. Hurry up, scientists.

It is indeed unusually warm at the coast today – right now sunny, light breeze and 75F (s of Newport). PERFECT!!! Just got home from a bike ride in shorts and short sleeves – first time for that all summer. Fog is due to roll in tonight, NW winds back tomorrow. Sigh…

It got to 98 here in the valley but is “cooled down” to 92 now at 7 pm. I hate this kind of weather. I require 50 at night in order to sleep.

Frustrating–the internet is so slow here I can only see jagged little bits of it. It’s been over two years since our last trip home, too, but at least I had a few weeks on the coast of central CA last year and a few days in Washington this spring.
