Serbian river house

Photographer Irene Becker captioned this, “A house in the middle of the Drina River near the town of Bajina Basta, Serbia.” It was a Photo of the Day on National Geographic last year.

I love the stairs cut into the boulder, the better to portage up the kayak. But the best part is the life preserver hanging off the back corner of the foundation.

    Amazing photo!
At first glance, it looked like some bizarre consequence of a flood. I wonder about the owner of such an unusual house.

This makes me think of one thing only: Mortal peril, every day. I’ve seen timid little rivers (much, much smaller than this one) turn into roaring monsters of destruction in a season of heavy rain, and tear apart everything in their path. Can’t even imagine the level of nonchalance and non-attachment needed to live happily in such a home.

It is a lovely photograph, though. 😉

  3. Wow! Perfect place for a honeymoon. 😉
