Yawn, another scandal and a “new” meme made from old stuff

Apparently, pop star Miley Cyrus became the latest ingénue singer determined to shake her sweet-young-thing image by shaking her ass and making a blatant sexual spectacle of herself at the Video Music Awards. Ho hum. We’ve seen this play before, far too many times, and the staging never changes.

I didn’t watch the awards, but it’s hard to avoid the headlines in my newsfeeds today. And they’re all talking about Miley’s “twerking.” This appears to be the latest meme, involving shaking one’s booty in a sexual manner, and I just have one question:

Isn’t that simply Brazilian samba? I mean, Brazilian samba stripped of all artistry, history, and culture, reduced to a single one of its signature dance moves, and given a new name?

Or maybe I’m just showing my age. But really, “twerking”? Let’s watch some real samba instead.

(Note: the dancers don’t start for a bit, but the percussion line (the bateria in Portuguese) is great fun. See if you can keep your toes from tapping. It’s in HD, so full-screen it!)

  1. Cool video. d–0.o–b

  2. Power Wench says:

I see one notable difference between the Samba and the so-called twerking: the Samba dancer does not grind her backside into the crotch of a nearby male performer.
