Obama pardons the sequester and sends it to Portugal

A late-night talk show host sends a “reporter” out into the street with a completely nonsensical question: What do you think about Obama pardoning the sequester and sending it to Portugal?

For my non-US readers: The sequester is a kind of financial doomsday law passed by Congress last year, in which both the Republicans and the Democrats approved large across-the-board funding cuts in the federal budget. Since the Republicans are horrified by the idea of cutting the defense budget, and the Democrats are horrified by the idea of cutting domestic programs, the sequester was supposed to give them incentive to come up with a real budget plan in order to avoid this financial doomsday. They had one year to do it, and still managed to fail. The sequester went into effect last Friday.

Thus it’s impossible to pardon the sequester, much less send it to Portugal, but you wouldn’t know that from the answers in this video. I was torn between despair and howling laughter, and decided to come down on the side of black comedy. How else can you view my nation’s dysfunctional government and uninformed voters?

Hat tip to Mary.

  1. Jorge says:

What on Earth did we do to Jimmy Kimmel for him to send the sequester our way? Damn! The guy is mean!

  2. Ana says:

Well, it’s nice to know Obama will uphold our constitutional right to have a 7th sequester. XD

  3. Lisa Shaw says:

Wow. One hopes … one prays … that those nice people in the video are all out-of-work actors who were given a coupon for a combo meal at McDonald’s in return for their contributions to this farce. Wow.

  4. syrint says:

ROTFL, hilarious, especially that last one.
Oh, and my favorite part? The two Spidermans behind the guy in the 3rd interview. 🙂
