For sale

Fact: Edward Munch’s “The Scream,” a pastel work on a board, sold at a Sotheby’s auction yesterday for $119,922,500.

Fact: When Real Madrid bought Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United in 2009, the transfer fee was 94 million euros — or, at the exchange rate of the time, about $132 million.

Just thought I’d point that out.

  1. It seems wrong. All of it. I have always believed that art, that people, are priceless (though some people make the latter debateable), and it cheapens them to put any price on them. That said? No athlete is worth that much. People are starving and lacking basic necessities all over the world and some idiot paid that much for a painting hhe can impress people with owning? Why not write a cheque for same to a good charity and demand anonymity?

  2. I wonder. Art and people are cheapened when a price is put on them. There are massive numbers of people lacking the very basic necessities of life, yet the person who purchased the art, who will no doubt hang it in a place of prominence in his grand home to impress visitors. It bothers me that he couldn’t imagine cutting a cheque for that amount to a reputable charity. Anonymously.
One day, someone will do that. I hope to live so long I see that day.

That is a bit mind boggling. I had seen an announcement of the auction for the painting. I have nothing good to say about the obscene amount of money that gets spent on some things while other needs are cut aside.

  4. that’s peanuts, alex rodriguez cost NY Yankees 250 million dollars.

    • The mind truly boggles at that. While I think people need to be paid well enough, how on earth does anyone justify paying anyone, and someone playing a game at that, so much money in the face of starvation and genocide. I just-no adquate expression of how appalled I am.
