Saturn and Tethys

Cassini project leader Carolyn Porco tweeted this image with the comment:

And now to remind us all what really matters..a fantasy view of Saturn in artful b&w, w/ its moon Tethys. Revel in it!

It does look like a fantasy painting: the knife-thin rings viewed edge on, nearly invisible, but with their massive shadows covering a huge swath of the planet beneath…and tiny Tethys hovering just below the rings, dead center in the image. Wow.

Just for a bit of scale, Tethys is over 1,000 km across, and it’s far out in the foreground, making it look much bigger relative to Saturn than it actually is. The immensity of this planet and its rings is hard for my brain to grasp. But I’ll keep trying.
