Yesterday my wife and I were discussing the inevitability of “The Talk” with our kid, who will be 12 soon. She maintains that as the step-parent, The Talk will be my job because it will be less embarrassing if the mom stays out of it. (Less embarrassing for whom, she didn’t specify.)

So it was with considerable glee that I saw this comic, which gives me some really evil ideas…

Great comic! But Portugal must be a more innocent place. If it were the US, 12 years old would be too late. At that age many kids are already “engaging in sexual behavior.”

  2. “Less embarrassing for whom, she didn’t specify.” hehe

I have had several friends who were stuck with this task. I have no concept of how effective from an outcome standpoint a cross-gender talk is (at least three of my female friends have been tasked with this); I think a male step parent probably has the worst time with it. Good Luck!

Thanks! Though I do confess to occasionally thinking about the method my parents used with me: they bought a 4-volume TIME/LIFE book series on sexuality for young adults and said, “Here, read this.”

She’s sticking you in Daddy role, isn’t she? Did you show her the comic? tell her you’d told him this already and it went over “really well?”

  5. Honestly, slapping self awake. I’d find a good book, recommended by many parents, give it to him and say “If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask your Mother.”
