Lake Louise

Watching a video of an Airbus A340-300 crabbing a landing in 80 mph (129 kph) crosswinds in Calgary got me thinking about Calgary…which got me thinking about the nearby Banff National Park, which got me thinking about Lake Louise. Hence, today’s wallpaper from one of North America’s most spectacular parks. (And one I still haven’t seen, dangit anyway.) There’s nothing quite like the northern Rocky Mountains…or the winds that roll off of them.

That area is really amazing. We canoed on Lake Moraine when we were there 25 years ago or so, and it is still a high point. I love the picture.

If it makes you feel any better, I went to Banff two summers in a row for hockey camp, yet never made it to Lake Louise. Everyone else at camp seemed to find a way there (and back), but I must have been asleep during the planning sessions.

Nope, doesn’t help, because I haven’t been to the park at ALL. (Lucky you!) But it’s on The List.

How about this: we had to sleep on cots set up on the (de-iced) curling sheets. I was cold, I was uncomfortable, and the only thing separating me from the noise made by the fifty 11-13 year old girls attending the youth camp was row of hospital screens. Plus, I ran into a bear while I was out running the second summer. Surely that helps a bit?

Hey, I’ve been there! fantastic place, scenery very reminiscent of parts of South Island, NZ, but on a huge scale. Even canoed the length of Lake Louise (and back) shoot it was a long way 🙂

Did you see this? I love Canada–everyone seems so happy to be helping a bear: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/video/2011/dec/14/black-bear-vancouver-rubbish-truck-video

Finally viewed this — great little feel-good video. And you’re right, everyone seems quite happy about it. I enjoyed the round of applause when the wildlife officers successfully caught the bear as it fell…
