Good news link dump

In the midst of all the bad news rolling into my newsreader — and wow does there seem to be a lot of it all of a sudden — I’ve decided it’s time for a small link dump of stories with happy endings (or at least, without bad ones).

1. Spiegel has a wonderful short article about two small children who foiled an armed robbery using nothing but their piggybanks…and a massive dose of shame.

2. A bit of hometown news from last month: a surfer in Newport kept his head, literally, when a great white shark took a bite out of his surfboard. (You have to see the photo to believe it. Amazing, and this is a beach I know very well.)

3. While we’re in marine mode, here’s a short video that has flashed around the internet, taken by a woman who was out in a kayak to watch humpback whales feeding off Santa Cruz, California. She got a much, much closer look than she anticipated. (The footage itself is great, but the YouTube caption is sensationalistic bullpuckey.)

4. Lastly, astronomers have found a star that produces — along with the usual amounts of electromagnetic energy — freaking huge water jets. Money quote:

“If we picture these jets as giant hoses and the water droplets as bullets, the amount shooting out equals a hundred million times the water flowing through the Amazon River every second,” said Lars Kristensen, a postdoctoral astronomer at Leiden University in the Netherlands.

“We are talking about velocities reaching 200,000 kilometers [124,000 miles] per hour, which is about 80 times faster than bullets flying out of a machine gun.”

Just a few small numbers to boggle your brain.

Good day!

You’ve forgotten the *really* good news, or maybe it’s still only potential good news–the Mars Science Laboratory launches on Saturday! I’m way excited.
