Jordan camels

After the Death Valley wallpaper two weeks ago, this one was a given. But you’d never mistake this scene for anywhere in North (or South) America, unless a nearby zoo had lost its population of camels.

Looking at the enormity of this sweep of mountains — and knowing that similar rugged country extends for much of the western edge of the nation — I wonder how anyone ever managed to find Petra?

It could, however, almost be mistaken for the Australian outback – similar rugged beauty. Not sure any of our mountains are quite as high, though. Camels made a great contribution to the exploration of inland Australia, and are still used for trekking. The train that runs from South Australia to Darwin was named ‘The Ghan’ after the men from Afghanistan who handled the camels. (would they be called camel “wranglers”?)
