serra da estrela

This is where we’re off to for a few days: the Serra da Estrela, highest mountains in continental Portugal. I’m told there’s actually skiing here during the winter, and a Google Image search seems to prove it, but my brain just can’t compute “Portugal” and “skiing” in the same equation.

At any rate, it’s a wee bit unlikely that we’ll be seeing snow on our trip, so I’ve packed lots of water bottles and my lightest, airiest trail shoes. Mountain trail hiking, yes! Plus, there’s cheese to be had. A special, regional cheese, soft and gooey. Having never yet met a cheese I didn’t like (well, except for medium cheddar, which is the most boring cheese in existence), I’m very much looking forward to trying this one.

We’ll be in sporadic internet contact, but I don’t expect to be blogging this week. Then again, who knows what might happen if I have enough beer and cheese in the quinta’s common room…

I’m not exactly a cheese lover, but if you like cheese, I’m sure you’ll love queijo da serra. It’s supposed to be very very good (and very very unhealthy as it’s very fat, and somewhat salty)

Looks amazing. Have a great trip!
