Saturday picture show

egret stealing fish

Today was market and gardening day, and I’m feeling quite lazy. So I’m handing you off to the Guardian, which has a wonderful batch of photos in its “week in wildlife” series. The sample above is my favorite — egrets are such opportunists. But I also enjoyed the recent discovery that male splendid fairy wrens use the “scary movie effect” to get the attention of females. Personally I think their plumage alone is attention-worthy, but female splendid fairy wrens are apparently harder to please. (Bonus factoid: These birds are socially monogamous for life, but do most of their mating outside of the pair bond. I wonder what would happen to the divorce rate if humans tried that?)

Surprised your favorite wasn’t the Snow Leopard in the snow!

Loved that one too. What got me about the egret photo was the expression on the face of the man looking at it. And then I wondered if the woman carrying the basket could feel the egret landing…

“Splendid fairy wren” has to be the best bird name, ever.
