On the way to Lisboa last weekend, we were zipping down a major highway (it used to be a main route to Lisboa before the toll freeway was built) and enjoying the scenery, when a “this is Portugal” scene suddenly appeared.
It was an overpass, arching over our highway, and filled from one side to the other with…sheep.
The flock was huge. The leaders were already on the other side, while the back end of the flock hadn’t even set foot on the overpass yet. The shepherd was just starting across.
I looked in the rearview mirror after we passed under, and the scene was exactly the same, meaning the sheep were filling that overpass not just from one side to the other but across its entire width as well. Nothing but wool!
There’s been a lot of construction in the rural areas of the Alentejo region lately, with new overpasses being built across the main highways. I always assumed they were for car transit, but now…who knows?

“Nothing but wool!” made me laugh out loud. Must have been quite a sight.
